LADIES Open Day at Wenvoe Castle Golf Club is always a popular event and this year was no exception with a good entry rewarded by yet another warm and sunny day.
The stableford competition involved teams of three players with the best two scores to count and you could almost guarantee a close finish was on the cards.
Local knowledge proved to be a major contribution as Helen Hughes, Fran Grant and Heather Thompson from the home club took the honours with a winning score of 78 points.
Narrowly missing out by just a single point were Barbara Beedham, Jane Lott and Trish Walker (Wenvoe Castle) – 77 points. It took a count back for them to pip Sue Macpherson, Mallory Armstrong (Newport) and Elaine Caveney (Cardiff) into third place.
The Visitors Prize went to Zena Jackson, Nita Evans and Val Evans (Vale of Glamorgan) with 74 points an excellent score on an away course.
Nearest the Pin on the ninth hole went to Dawn Towell (Monmouthshire) just 213cm from a hole in one and Nearest the Line on the 14th hole was won by Ann Birt (Cottrell Park).
Two’s Prize – Janet Nicholls (Glamorganshire) second hole, Jane Lott (Wenvoe Castle) 15th hole, Lynda Campbell (Wenvoe Castle) 15th hole.
Lady captain Barbara Beedham presented the prizes and thanked all involved for their part in organising the day with special mention for Nicola Sims and her team of bar and catering staff who had worked tirelessly throughout the long day.
Once again the golf course was presented in a magnificent condition and players were highly complimentary about the quality of the greens which have gained a deserved reputation for being one of the best in the region.
