SEVEN walkers including leader Joy gathered at St Curig’s Church in Porthkerry village and descended through the sunken lane near Church Farm to cross a meadow at the bottom from where there were great views of the Porthkerry Viaduct. Crossing the newly laid cycle track a footbridge led over the brook and onto part of the Barry Heart Walk devised in conjunction with the British Heart Foundation’s bid to get people fit and healthy, before a series of newly installed metal kissing gates led them through meadows and then uphill beside the Whitelands Brook to Port Road.

This landmark show will feature a selection of Genesis classics and will feature some of the gems he could not include on the award-winning Genesis Revisited tours in 2012 and 2013. With a career spanning decades and a repertoire which includes a body of outstanding solo work, this will be the last opportunity for fans to see Hackett perform a whole set entirely from the Genesis catalogue.

Walkers visit Exmoor National Park

WILLIAM was joined by ten walkers for a two day mid-week walking festival in part of the Exmoor National Park which covers 267 square miles of stunning moorland, woodland, hidden valleys and enormous cliffs overlooking the Bristol Channel. For their first adventure they set off from the pretty village of Porlock and joined part of the 51mile long Coleridge Way, dedicated to Samuel Taylor Coleridge famous for his poems Kubla Khan and the Rime of the Ancient Mariner. The delightful old packhorse bridge at Horner was followed by a steep climb through oak woods and up to Webber’s Post for refreshments whilst they gazed at their intended target of Dunkery Beacon, situated at 519 metres and the highest point on Exmoor.

THE guest speaker at Sully U3A's September meeting was Dean Powell. He is a guest speaker, journalist, author, broadcaster and vocalist. His prolific workload varies from presenting high-profile engagements in some of the world's largest concert halls to lecturing on the life of Welsh radical, Dr William Price, of whom he is considered the leading expert. Dean gave an enthralling account of William Price's life from his birth in 1800 to his death at the age of 92. William Price trained as a doctor studying at the London Hospital and becoming a member of the Royal College of Surgeons at the age of 21. He supported Welsh nationalism, wanted to build a Museum of Welsh Life, supported Chartism and was involved with the Druid religion. His achievements were many and various including creating Wales's first co-operative and performing a successful Caesarean operation on Francis Crawshay's wife.

SEVEN walkers joined Geraint and his sheepdog Patch for the journey to Machen where they were greeted by light rain and had to don coats but almost as soon as they set off the rain cleared and the sunshine returned. They joined the Rhymney River Circular Walk which is denoted by waymarkers containing a pretty dragonfly and walked downstream passing through a field of mixed livestock with ponies, calves and donkeys, deviating at one point where the path was overgrown on their journey to the pretty village of Draethen.
