By the fifteenth end Romilly were ahead on three rinks with only Mel Newman’s rink behind by just three shots 14 – 17 having recovered from a horrendous start finding themselves 13 – 0 down at one stage. Graham Cogbill’s rink were playing well and were always ahead of the Caerphilly rink skipped by Welsh International Martin Selway and by the final end had won comfortably by eight shots 26 – 18. Mel Newman’s rink continued to battle over the last six ends and although three down on the final end and holding a single Mel produced a brilliant bowl to make another two and draw the game making a vital point. The other two Romilly rinks skipped by Jeff Wright and Brian Foscolo were nip and tuck with the opposition and with one end to play both rinks were drawing 15 – 15 and 19 – 19 respectively unfortunately Wright dropped a single to lose by one and Foscolo a double to lose by two. Although a disappointing finish to the game the ‘Rom’ had still won overall 81 – 76 and taken the scalp of a very good side who had been unbeaten, with Romilly taking 9 points to Caerphilly’s 5 points.
