Saints show class to upstage Cossacks

9:01am Friday 12th September 2014

BARRY Saints produced a great team performance to dismantle a feisty Cardiff Cossacks. Saints found themselves 1-0 up after Nathan Williams headed the ball against the crossbar with David Evans sliding the rebound across the box for Darren Townsend to steer the ball in to the back of the net. Townsend got his second with an accurate finish into the bottom corner after a beautiful pass by David Evans. A free kick from the half way line again by Evans was whipped in where Williams controlled the ball beautifully before smashing a half volley into the goal. As Cossacks pressed, Saints took them apart with crisp passing football with the defenders starting the move working the ball into the creative Evans who squared the ball with Townsend finishing off the post with a powerful effort. Saints continued to press in the second half and were rewarded when Williams finished off another lovely passing move which started from the back with the ball hitting the post before crossing the line. Townsend with his usual unselfish play turned provider squaring the ball from the left hand side for Williams to grab another and a carbon copy from the right hand side to allow Cummings to add another. David Evans scored from the penalty spot after Cummings was bundled over in the box. Cossacks pulled a goal back from a deflected long range effort. Williams grabbed his fourth with another low finish before Cossacks added a second from a corner. Williams finished the scoring converting from another Townsend cross. The match ended on a bad note for the opposition as a Cossacks player decided to take out his frustrations with a headbutt on a Saints winger and rightfully received his marching orders. Saints looking in good shape and back to their best.

ROMILLY Bowling Club held their Finals Day on Saturday with eight Men’s games taking place in four sessions, with the Women sharing the green to play their six finals. Cogbill then scored a single on each of the next two ends but Trepleton hit back with a two and a three to lead 20 – 5. Although Cogbill won the next four ends Trepleton sealed the victory with a single on the 22nd end to win 21 – 10. The Mottram Cup contested by Rhodri Phillips and Jeff Coles was a hard fought affair with the scores level at end fifteen 12 – 12, the match began to swing in favour of Phillips who won four of the next five ends to move 17 – 14 ahead. Phillips continued the pressure over the final few ends scoring four shots to two to win the game on the 24th end 21 – 16. First Year bowler Dave Phillips joined Tony Freeman to play Alan Bannister and Phil Gershenson in the two wood final played in two sets of seven ends.
