Barry resumed their League programme after last week's Cup reverse with a home game against local rivals

Old Penarthians.

From the first seconds of the game Barry signified their intention to run the ball with an early break by Perry resulting in a try within the first minute for Provis duly converted by Scott.

This was to be the pattern of the game with Barry utilising pace and power to break down the visitors defence with Evans, Jones G and Perry to the fore with the latter on hand to benefit from a clever blind side snipe by Lee to cross for the second score to give the home side a 14 point lead.

Pens were finding it difficult to create many attacking opportunities and were left with kicking for territory being their only option, a tactic which at least gave them a hold in the Barry half.

Even from this position the home side opted with ball in hand as being the best form of defence. From one such situation Adams created some space for himself and raced 60yds downfield only to be thwarted just short of the line. He recovered the ball to cross for a fine individual try which was not converted but gave Barry a19 point cushion after 25mins.

In the final minutes of the first half the Pens finally were able to threaten the Barry line with a series of scrums and lineouts. They came back without any reward as a strong defensive effort managed to withstand the pressure as the half closed.

Barry set off the second period eager to gain the bonus point win for scoring four tries to maintain the pressure at the top of the table. The visitors also made their intentions known as a change of tactic saw them playing with ball in hand.

Following an incident free first ten minutes the game sprang back to life when from a three-quarter move by Barry which appeared to break down, Scott gathered the loose ball to cross for an unconverted try.

Playing down the slope Barry began to gain supremacy up front giving themselves ample possession, which on occasion they were prone to squander, to dominate the game.

Despite the visitors heroic defensive efforts, they were put to the sword as tries came at regular intervals in the last 20mins. The strangest came from Oaten, who when everyone else stopped awaiting the refs whistle carried on running to score unopposed.

Further tries were added by Perry, a brace to complete a fine hat-trick, Ryan and Evans giving Barry a good 58 points to nil victory.

Barry have reached the end of this year unbeaten in the League.Whilst that is of great credit and it would be unfair to mention individuals, the most pleasing aspect to the watching supporters is those fringe players, who, when giving the chance have stepped up to the mark and given the whole squad a more competitive edge and selection problems for the coaching team.

The team can look forward to the new year with optimism no doubt realising that there are many hurdles to be faced over the coming months.
