BRACKLA 1 CADOXTON BARRY FC 1

THOUGH two key players remained on the injury list for Tuesday evening's league match, the return of others saw Cadoxton Barry starting with a slightly more competitive line up and a stronger looking bench than of late.

Even so, the early stages saw Brackla taking the game to the Barry side. And their efforts were rewarded when David Burke, son of former Barry Town player Nicky Burke, put his side into the lead with a quality header scored from a corner kick.

Though CB had chances that came and went, Brackla continued to look the more dangerous side overall - Lee Norris keeping CB in the game with a string of good saves while Alex Lee also looked solid at the back.

There was some controversy when the Brackla 'keeper raced a couple of metres out of his box to palm away a long ball. However, with three defenders behind him, the referee ruled that it was not a scoring opportunity and brandished just the yellow card.

The second half started with CB showing a bit more purpose up front. Then three quick fire substitutions completely changed the face of the game as Pat Curran, Gareth Fiddler and Sam Dyer took to the field of play. Brackla, having been the dominant force up to the break, were now a side looking to hang on to a lead rather than increase it.

And long before Brackla were reduced to ten men - a player swearing at the referee - a CB equaliser looked on the cards. And it eventually came when Aiden Lewis stooped to cleverly head home from a long and looping diagonal ball sculpted by the boot of Alex Lee.

Sensing that all three points could be theirs, CB went for the jugular, throwing men forward at every opportunity. But, unfortunately, time ran out and they were forced to settle for a valuable away point

CADOXTON BARRY FC 2 DAFEN WELFARE 4

NUMEROUS reasons saw Cadoxton Barry field a well-under-full-strength squad for last Saturday's FAW Trophy game - something that a lack of good fortune has seen occur quite often in recent times.

Yet the battling display that this team put on left most home supporters believing that a full squad might well have strolled into the next round.

But you can only play what is in front of you, and that's exactly what Carmarthenshire League side Dafen Welfare did.

CB conceded two corners in the first 2 minutes, Lee Norris palming the second on to the inside of his left upright before it was cleared to safety. And then CB conceded a penalty, but Scott Evans sent it wide of Norris' right hand post.

By small degrees CB started to work their way into the game, and this culminated in a goal just short of the half hour mark when a high and teasing Walsh free kick from the left was mishandled by 'keeper Rumbelow, allowing Aiden Lewis to scramble home the loose ball.

This lifted CB as they started to gain the larger share of possession.

However, Dafen might well have drawn level when, in a breakaway, a cross from the right found a forward who was offered a free shot on goal by a frozen CB rearguard. Fortunately for CB the forward's aim was woefully poor and the home lead was preserved.

Norris then made a brave save at the feet of an incoming forward and there were a few anxious moments as he needed attention from the magic sponge. But he recovered to see a Baker overhead effort bring a good save out of Rumbelow.

The second half started with Dafen back in offensive mode, taking just 5 minutes to get back on level terms as Kristen Brown got on the end of a defence splitting pass. Back came CB straight from the restart, a Connor Macinery long range effort going only a whisker over the bar.

Then a Lewis volley was spilled by Rumbelow but no CB player was on hand to take advantage of the rebound.

Shortly after, however, spectators might have felt that they were getting a feeling of deja vu as another Dafen move of many passes culminated with Wayne Williams finishing off with a low angled shot, that put the visitors into the lead for the first time.

A challenge from behind saw Ben Stait booked before his brother Lewis failed by only a whisker to cut out a cross that saw Frater put his side into a comfortable looking 3-1 lead.

But it didn't look comfortable for long as, within 5 minutes, Aiden Lewis rounded off an excellent team build-up with a quality low blast from 15 yards out.

With extra time now within their sights, CB began to go for it as Murphy headed just over from a Walsh corner. Then a Murphy cross-cum-shot was beaten away by Rumbelow as Adam Dyer was only a foot away from connecting with the rebound that would have brought extra time.

But Dafen finally wrapped it up with literally seconds remaining as a rare lapse saw Barnet lose possession for Frater to score a fourth for the visitors. There was no time for a restart.

This Saturday Cwm Welfare will visit Jenner Park for a Bruty Cup match, kick off 1.30pm.
