Welsh Cup fourth round: COLWYN BAY 2 BARRY TOWN UNITED 0

BARRY missed out on a quarter-final place in the Welsh Cup after a 2-0 defeat to Colwyn Bay.

Report by Ian Johnson

Barry came away from their Welsh Cup fourth round tie at Colwyn Bay empty-handed, the home side scoring two first half goals to reach the quarter-final.

The re-scheduled game had been postponed due to heavy rain in North Wales a week earlier, but was played at Llanelian Road at the second time of asking.

Barry had the game’s first chance. The home side were struggling to get the ball clear, and Michael George’s shot from distance rose just over the bar.

From then on, though, the home side dominated. Cutting in from the left, Jamie Cumming’s low shot went narrowly to the side of the Barry goal.

The opening goal came after twenty minutes. Working down the left, the cross bounced across the Barry six yard box, where Alex Downes was given too much space and fired back across goal into the bottom corner of the net.

A few minutes later, Bay broke quickly through Tom Creamer. He squared the ball for Udoyen Akpan, but his effort went well over the bar.

The second goal came five minutes before the break. Some quick interplay between Colwyn Bay players at the edge of the box saw Daniel Jones combine with Akpan, whose backheel allowed Jones to score from twelve yards out.

Barry came close to pulling a goal back in the second half when a long ball into the box saw home goalkeeper, Joe Smith, stumble in the race for the ball, but he recovered enough to stop Kayne McLaggon’s shot.

At the other end, Luc Rees saved well from Akpan, when he turned inside his marker to shoot.

The fourth meeting between the two clubs in 2023, this was Bay’s first ever win over Barry.

Ninth place in the Cymru Premier, Barry travel to Haverfordwest County on Boxing Day and are at home to Cardiff Met at Jenner Park on Saturday, 30th December.
