Barry took a welcome Cymru Premier league point in a hotly contested South Wales derby at Jenner Park on Tuesday.

It was very much a game of two halves, with Barry bossing the first forty-five minutes and Penybont on top in the second.

Barry were the brighter side in the first half. In the fourth minute, Ollie Hulbert ran at the visitors’ defence but the final shot from Lucas Tomlinson went across the goal and wide.

Hulbert again played a key role in another chance, laying off to Kayne McLaggon, but his effort was easily collected by Pennock in the Penybont goal.

Barry took the lead after 25 minutes. After Hulbert was fouled, Jamie Veale’s free kick into the box was headed down by Callum Sainty and an unmarked McLaggon scored past Pennock from close range.

The second half was a very different affair as seventh-placed Penybont, even without star striker Chris Venables, stepped up the pressure on Barry.

After an hour, Elliot Richards broke free of the Barry defence but drew his shot wide, while Harry Jones turned on a sixpence to shoot at the near post, Barry ‘keeper Luc Rees saving smartly.

Minutes later, a corner from the Penybont right was cleared off the Barry line, but it felt as though the Penybont pressure was growing.

Luc Rees saved well from a Henry Jones header, but the resulting quick short corner saw the visitors equalise. Elliott Richards chipped the ball into the middle and former Barry striker Keyon Refell headed past Rees to make it 1-1.

Penybont continued with an aerial bombardment of the Barry defence, but Curtis McDonald and Callum Sainty calmly dealt with the threat, leaving both teams satisfied with a point apiece.

Barry travel to face Connah’s Quay on Saturday before their Welsh Cup fourth round away game at Colwyn Bay on Saturday, December 9.
