WELSH CUP ROUND THREE PREVIEW: PORTHAMDOG VS CARDIFF AIRPORT

A BIG occasion is approaching in the Vale football leagues with Cardiff Airport about to play their first-ever Welsh Cup third round tie.

The fixture is so historic for the club, who take on JD Cymru North League competitors Porthmadog, they have had a special message from Barry Mayor, Councillor Ian Johnson.

Airport head up to the North Walian coastline on Saturday, November 11, after knocking out JD Cymru South side Abergavenny Town 3-1 in what was probably the biggest upset of round two - with Abergavenny having played in the same division as JD Cymru Premier outfit Barry Town last year.

In a superb away performance, boosted by the support of two coach loads of supporters, Curtis Scotto opened the scoring for Airport in the first 10 minutes.

Abergavenny equalised, but the game was sewn up inside two minutes midway through the second half with a Scotto penalty and Jack Davies scoring Airport’s third.

After the game, Cardiff Airport said on X, formally Twitter: “The travel support was immense.

“Two coach loads made their way to Abergavenny and the boys on the pitch in our new pink kit did everyone proud.”

In previous rounds, Airport knocked out Cefn Fforest, Cardiff Bay and Cwmbach Royal Stars.

Airport, of the South Wales Alliance Premier, will be heavy underdogs in the upcoming tie, being the lowest ranked team left in the competition while Porthmadog play two divisions higher.

Mayor Ian Johnson, said it would be “awesome” if Airport win.

“Good luck to Cardiff Airport in their away game at Porthmadog,” said Mayor Johnson.

“It’s a great achievement for the club to reach this stage in the Welsh Cup, the last 32 in Wales, and it would be awesome if they can cause a shock and repeat their away win against Abergavenny.”

Porthmadog come into the game off the back of a home league drubbing by high-flying Flint Town United, losing 3-1.

Cardiff Airport face Porthmadog at the Traeth (‘Beach’) in Porthmadog at 2pm, Saturday, November 11.
