BARRY Comprehensive pupil David Lakin shone for the Wales Schools Under 16 "A" side at last week's International Rugby Festival at Millfield.

The talented outside half, who is set to take up a scholarship at Millfield next year, was instrumental in all three of Wales's performances during the week-long festival which included International Teams from Scotland, England, Romania, Portugal, Canada, USA, France and Wales.

First up, the Wales side beat Scotland Under 17 first team 21-17 in an enthralling encounter with Lakin contributing three penalties and a conversion, as well as controlling the game superbly.

Against Romania Under 17 the Barry star came off the bench and made a huge impact giving Wales structure to their game plan as well as bagging a try and two conversions in a 55-8 victory.

The last game against England in front of a large crowd saw Lakin score a try from a charge down in the first minute and coolly slot the conversion for a great start. In the second half, he put over a 40 metre penalty to put Wales back in the lead with twenty minutes to go, but a strong finish by England and some strange interpretations from the Scottish referee, saw England go on to win 25-15.

It was a great week for the Barry Comprehensive product who enhanced his growing reputation Wales Coach David Manley who also coaches Lakin at school said: "David played at a level exceeding expectation.

"He showed that he copes well with the demands of International Rugby and I hope he takes from the week knowledge that will allow him to fulfil his potential and become a professional player. He was a credit to the school and to Barry."
