TWO young gymnasts from Barry have flown to Australia’s Gold Coast to compete in the Commonwealth Games early next month.
Josh Cook, 17, and Iwan Mepham, 21, will represent Wales in artistic gymnastics at the Games.
Until the opening ceremony on the 4 April, both gymnasts will continue their hard work at a pre-Games training camp with their Welsh Gymnastics national coach, Peter Haysham.
Mr Haysham said both Barry sportsmen had been preparing for 12 months: “They’re young but have lots of potential.”
Before flying to Australia on Monday, both gymnasts and their coach were visited at their normal training venue, Barry YMCA, by local MP Alun Cairns.
Mr Cairns congratulated both young men on their achievement.
Speaking after the meeting, he said: “It was a huge honour to watch the boys train before they head off to the Commonwealth Games to fly the flag for Wales. Their routines were impressive.”
Mr Cairns even had a go on the rings. “I think I’d better leave the gymnastics to them,” he laughed.
He added: “Good luck, boys. You’ll do us proud
