BARRY Town United wrapped up their fixtures for 2016 with a dramatic late triumph on their travels last Saturday, clinching three valuable Welsh League points at Undy Athletic, after snatching a stoppage-time winner.

With an evenly-matched Division One encounter poised at one apiece, Town manager Gavin Chesterfield brought substitutes TJ Nagi and Michael Hartley into the fray; and the latter would soon supply the pinpoint set piece for teammate Ryan Evans to head home.

Edging the first half on a difficult, muddy surface, Barry had carved out a 1 - 0 half-time advantage, after Drew Fahiya’s testing effort was wickedly deflected beyond Undy goalkeeper James Smallcombe.

The hosts however kept themselves in the game and were more than deserving of their second half equaliser; James Barnes receiving the ball from an intelligent back heel and firing a grounded strike into the bottom corner, beating shotstopper Mike Lewis to cap a well-worked move.

With Evans’ injury-time header tilting the contest in Barry’s favour, Smallcombe threw himself forward in desperation to bolster the Undy attack, yet the Athletic were unable to snare a last-gasp equaliser; allowing Barry to leave the Causeway ground with a precious win in the bag,

With contenders Caerau, Afan Lido and Cambrian and Clydach all dropping points, fifth-placed Barry now find themselves in a favourable position heading into the Christmas break; with several games in hand on all the top four, as the Town seek to close the six-point gap on leaders Goytre.

The team's first match of 2017 on Saturday, January 7, (2pm kick-off) will see sixth-placed Penybont return to Jenner Park, with Rhys Griffiths’ squad ending the present year on a rich run of form, winning seven of their last nine Welsh League fixtures, while knocking Welsh Premier League outfit and 2015-16 finalists Airbus out of the Welsh Cup.

Meanwhile, tickets are now on sale for Barry’s first cup final since 2003, as the Town take on Welsh Premier League champions and current holders The New Saints in the 2016-17 Nathaniel MG Cup Final at the Cyncoed Stadium in Cardiff on Saturday, January 21 (kick-off 5.15pm).

Having shifted more than 150 on the opening day, tickets are priced at £7 (adults) and £3 (senior citizens/under-18s) and are available from the Jenner Suite on Thursday evenings in the run-up to the big fixture, as well as other matchday occasions, while stocks last.

A special Supporters’ Package is also being offered at £10 per head (£5 for kids), which includes access to the Jenner Suite on the day of the game between 3pm and 4pm, as well as a cup final ticket and return travel from Jenner Park.
