Haverfordwest County 0 - Barry Town United 0

LAST Saturday’s Welsh League Division One fixture between Haverfordwest County and Barry Town United proved a tale of two penalties, as the travelling Town side made it six consecutive clean sheets against their former Welsh Premier League opponents.

Awarded the first in the 28th minute, to the chagrin of the Barry defence, the Bluebirds looked to open the scoring from the penalty spot, only for player/coach Chris O’ Sullivan to see his effort saved by Town goalkeeper Mike Lewis.

With the home side spurning the subsequent rebound, the tide then seemed to turn in Barry’s favour moments before the half-time whistle, as County’s Ashley Bevan was handed a straight red card for an apparent attempt at a two-footed tackle on Town midfielder Louis Gerrard.

Nevertheless, the Jenner Park outfit were unable to make the most of their second half advantage, with forward Jordan Cotterill striking a post and defender Bobby Briers seeing his own spot kick saved by County shot stopper James Gwilt.

The introduction of long-serving striker Michael Hartley, in place of Gerrard, during the latter stages offered Barry a fresh impetus up front, as Town attempted to crack the nut once and for all.

However, Gwilt’s resilient defence refused to be infiltrated, as Haverfordwest maintained their iron grip on what ended up being a hard-fought home point.

The goalless draw at Bridge Meadow Stadium, Barry’s second of the league campaign, left the Town fifth in Division One with eight points from their first four outings, ahead of the visit of Afan Lido this weekend.

Barry and Lido have already crossed paths once this season, with the Town emerging 3 - 0 winners after extra-time in the second round of the Welsh League Cup.

Kick-off on Saturday at Jenner Park will be at 2.30pm, with the Jenner Suite open from 1.30pm.

Admission at the Barry Road and Gladstone Road turnstiles is £5, with concessions available for senior citizens, students and accompanied children.
