A BARRY schoolgirl is set to follow in the footsteps of some of Team GB's Rio heroes when she competes at an elite multi-sport event this week.

Bryn Hafren comprehensive pupil Erin Charlie Corcoran will join athletes from across South Wales selected to take part in the 2016 School Games as she represents Wales in fencing.

The national multi-sport event for the UK’s elite young athletes takes place at Loughborough University and Sheffield from September 1 to 4.

Erin, 14, said she considered her greatest achievement, so far, was finishing second in the British Youth Championships (BYC) in the under-14 age group.

Erin, who trains at Russell Swords in Cardiff, also finished 9th this year in the under-17s, at the BYCs, in cadet girls sabre.

Erin said: “I was so excited to be selected for the School Games. It has been one of my goal to complete in the games and I came to watch and support last year. It is also my first time representing Wales. It has taken a lot of hard work and determination from my coaches, friends and family and also myself.”

Previous competitors in the School Games include Rio Olympic gold medallist and world-record breaking swimmer Adam Peaty.

Other gold winners Owain Doull, Georgie Twigg, Lily Owsley and Elinor Barker also took part previously, as did Paralympic champions Hannah Cockroft, Ellie Simmonds and Jonnie Peacock, heptathlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson and GB sprinter Adam Gemili.

The event will see 1,600 athletes competing across 12 sports.

The four-day event is supported by National Lottery funding from Sport England and delivered by the Youth Sport Trust.
