AT THE height of the golfing season the major competitions come thick and fast and yet another glorious day ensured the Wenvoe Castle Golf Club ladies enjoyed warm and sunny conditions for the Ladies Open.

The superb setting of a golf course in prime condition meant that the actual golf being played was almost incidental with players simply enjoying a stroll in ideal weather conditions.

The competition attracted a large entry with over 100 players from throughout the region and the format, with teams of three, meant that individual competitors could still have the occasional disappointment without seriously affecting the overall team score.

The benefit of local knowledge was offset with prizes awarded for the best scores by visiting teams as well as for the teams from the home club.

The winning team in the visitors section were Mary Burke and Rita Howells from the Vale Resort who, with Wendy Motton, posted an impressive score of 80 points. Runners-up with 77 points were Caroline Bird, Kate Parker and Karen Alexander from St Pierre Golf Club.

The friendly rivalry for the prizes for the home team was clearly evident during the presentation as the winning score of 81 points by Lynda Campbell, Fran Grant and Nicola Sims was announced. Missing out by just a single point were the runners-up Barbara Beedham, Lesley Arnold and Tina Church.

The lady captain Sandra Hathway presented the prizes including flowers and thanked all the teams who had supported the competition and made it such a successful day. The weather had clearly played its part and the efforts of green staff and the bar and catering were appreciated by all who took part.

Special mention was made about the contribution by the members who assisted with the smooth organisation throughout the day.
