BARRY Town United's James Dixon ripped up the record books on Saturday, scoring five times for the second consecutive JD Welsh Cup tie to set up a mouth-watering Fourth Round clash with holders The New Saints.

In front of the Sgorio cameras, Dixon led the way for an inspired Barry as they put North Walian opponents Denbigh Town to the sword; delighting a hometown crowd of approximately 350 at Jenner Park.

After breaking the deadlock with a smooth right-footed finish, Dixon soon doubled his side’s advantage, capitalising on a Ryan Evans long ball that hung teasingly in the wind and bamboozled a Denbigh defender before slotting the ball past the visiting goalkeeper.

The Cymru Alliance outfit did come close to reducing the arrears, most notably when skipper Warren Duckett’s long-range strike bounced fortunately off the crossbar and straight into the hands of Barry goalkeeper Dan Bradley.

However, Barry’s progress was all but sealed on the stroke of half-time as Dixon completed a remarkable first half hat-trick; beating his man to a cross from the right from the sensational Drew Fahiya and powering home from close range.

The second half saw Denbigh forced into chasing the game, making two immediate substitutions, but subsequently falling at increasing risk to the counter attack.

With their relentless form showing little sign of letting up, Barry soon capitalised; the impressive Jordan Cotterill dancing through defenders on the left and squaring to a waiting Dixon, who finished the move at the second attempt to put the tie beyond the visitors.

Denbigh did seize a consolation through Matthew Hughes later on; the left back tapping home after Bradley had made a fine stop at his near post.

However, the Welsh Cup headlines would again belong to that man Dixon, who netted an incredible tenth in two rounds with a clinical finish from a smart through ball.

The North Wales team’s misery was confounded in the latter stages as a Mike Sharples backpass found the goalkeeper well off his line and ended up rolling agonisingly into his own net.

The convincing win however was little more than the dynamic Barry performance deserved; with a host of players, including the versatile Lee Baldock and exciting newcomer Kareem Leigh, enjoying perhaps their finest games in Town colours all campaign.

They ran out 6-1 winners against a side whose formidable cup record had carried them all the way to this season’s Word Cup Final, Barry’s performance will have caused the entire tournament to take notice; not least Welsh Premier League champions TNS, who will pose a tantalising challenge for Gavin Chesterfield’s men in February’s Fourth Round.

With the two sides paired together in Sunday afternoon’s draw on S4C, the Barry/TNS match will be the first meeting of the former championship rivals in over a decade and is set to be played on the weekend of February 5, 6 and 7, 2016, at Jenner Park.

This weekend sees Welsh League football return to centre stage, as Barry welcome Penybont in a 2pm kick-off on Saturday afternoon. The Town were 2-0 winners in Bridgend earlier in the season and will hope to secure another three points as they continue to close in on a top three position.

Admission this weekend is at the regular rate of £5 via both the Barry Road and Gladstone Road turnstiles, with the usual concessions available for senior citizens, students and children.
