Rhoose Rovers 2 - 6 Cadoxton Barry 2nds

Newlands 2, Weekley, Steel, Angove N, Morgan

Rhoose were immediately on the offensive and it was two minutes before CB keeper Hopkins was able to clear. The long ball downfield found Steel to execute the first shot of the match, the excellent home keeper getting well behind the shot. But Rhoose came back to reassert themselves as they won a series of corners.

CB's riposte was to feed the ball to Morgan who produced two dangerous crosses which the keeper did very well in cutting out before they reached a striker. Eventually though, one did get through where Newlands was on hand to provide the finishing touch.

Rhoose responded with a corner from which they appealed for a penalty - claiming that a shot blasted against Newlands was hand ball, though, in truth, it would have taken a super human reaction to have avoided it.

Angove then put Coles through, his close range effort being well saved. And shortly after, Morgan, who was giving the home rearguard a right run around, broke through down the left. He appeared to have been brought down in the box, but the free kick went the other way. However, CB responded with a quick passing move involving Steel, Morgan and Newlands - the last of the trilogy finishing from six yards following another fine feed from Morgan.

In the next attack the home defender safely beat his attacker to the ball but, inexplicably, he tried to cross it back to his keeper. But the alert Weekley spotted the ploy to intercept before taking it round the keeper to slot into an empty net.

But the game didn't look safe for more than two minutes for the visitors as an expertly taken corner was whipped in towards the near post where an alert Rovers player was on hand to finish things off. So with 60 minutes on the clock and still just the two goal cushion, CB needed to shift into another gear. And this they did.

But firstly Christopherato came on for the excellent two goal Newlands. Immediately a double interchange of passes between Morgan and Weekley created an opportunity for Steel which was comfortably converted. Then Morgan set off on another of his mesmerising runs down the wing, skipping over a couple of challenges before finding Neil Angove to finish following a deceiving little shimmy.

With the hosts now looking a little tired, a long ball out of defence from Walsh found Weekley out to the left. In turn, he found Morgan whose dancing footwork turned the keeper inside out to create the space to make it six.

Although the game was now out of reach, to their credit, Rhoose didn’t stop trying. And they conjured up a consolation when, arguably, the best goal of the game was scored from distance with the CB keeper standing a little forward of his line.

With their first team without a game Cadoxton Barry was able to bolster their side with a few of their more experienced players. So, although Rhoose Rovers were well beaten in the end, a lot of credit must go to them for staying in the match well into the second half.

Barry Rovers 1 - 4 Cadoxton Barry 3rds

Gannon 2, Smart, Amos

For the second game running CB had to play a match without a bespoke keeper. So, once again, special thanks go to Mike Bobbet for taking the job on at short notice.

CB pressed at the start, but the match was 25 minutes old before they got their noses in front when Gannon, having spotted the keeper forward, found the net with a lob. And Smart extended that lead with a fine strike from just beyond the box.

But back came Rovers and following a spell of pressure, a throw from the left wing was well trapped before being steered home to leave things with all to play for at half time.

BR's offensive continued for a further 15 minutes into the second half, but CB weathered the storm to see Gannon hit on the break with another excellent dipping shot.

And super sub, Amos wasn't on the field long before he received an accurate low cross from Oaten to toe poke the fourth home.

As with the 2nds match, CB 3rds were reinforced with a couple of first team regulars who were without a game. So it was always going to be difficult for Rovers from the start. However the fact that they managed to make a contest of things until well into the second half does them great credit.
