South Wales Senior League Division Two

Cadoxton Barry 4 - 1 Stanleytown

Steel, Weekley, Edwards

Oaten, Williams

ALTHOUGH a few Stanleytown changes saw them put up a much harder fight than they had in the reverse fixture the previous Saturday, Cadoxton Barry still ran out comfortable winners in the end. But a lack a discipline when there was no danger of defeat will cost dearly in fines and suspensions as they clocked up a tally of four yellow cards and a red.

Though CB threatened early on as a move from Steel through to Dawson earned a corner which Steel took for Dawson to head just over, it was a bit of a slow start for CB - taking a while to get into gear. But CB did get their noses in front in the twentieth minute when Adams fed the ball over to Steel on the right. He took the ball to within a couple of yards of the by line before sending in a cheeky little cross-shot towards the near post to completely deceive the 'keeper and see it go in.

A long throw taken on the left set up Stanleytown's first threat as the recipient dipped his shot only just over the bar. And this signaled a spell of pressure from the visitors, a corner being headed away by Curran at the far post. Then a forward latched on to a long ball out of defence and looked likely to score in a one on one with 'keeper, Harker. But he stood firm to pull off a vital save from a powerful close range shot.

Then Harker turned from goal saver to goal maker as one of the longest clearances he has ever made found the opposing 'keeper attempting to clear and, in doing so, send the ball into the path of the in rushing Weekley. And he didn't need a second invitation to stroke the ball home into an unguarded net with 38 minutes on the clock. Then two solo runs by Williams in close succession saw final shots going just wide on both occasions.

For Stanleytown, a rising angled shot from right to left rose just too high to fly just over the bar at the far post. Then a quality passing move involving at least seven CB players and some fifteen or so passes concluded when Dawson finally finished from, what was ruled to be, an off side position.

But the visitors had the final say of the half when they broke out of defence to see a perfectly weighted cross field ball from right to left find Edwards, whose scissor-kicked volley screamed into the net, leaving Harker no chance.

So, despite controlling the half, CB started the second with the game still very much in the balance. And it took a further fifteen minutes for them to get back into their earlier rythym. Following a couple of substitutions which saw Oaten and Morgan come into the fray, Stanleytown missed a chance to level things up when a melee in front of goal saw a shot punted over the bar with Harker out of position.

And Stanleytown paid for that almost immediately as Williams latched on to a long ball from the back, his powerful shot rebounding back into play for Oaten, running down the right, to deliver the coup-de-grass with a fine rising drive into the far corner of the net. The pressure was now back on with Dawson going close with a long and low shot that was only marginally wide.

And then, with two minutes remaining on the clock it was game, set and match when Williams brought down a high ball from Morgan to dip a fabulous and fierce drive into the net from fully twenty-five yards out to the left side of the penalty box. That should have been it, but there was still time to pick up another card before the final whistle.

Although it's early days yet, this win helps to consolidate Cadoxton Barry's second spot in the division. Next week Cadoxton Barry is back on the road when they take on Ynyshir.

In the Vale of Glamorgan League CB seconds beat Barry Albion 3 – 2 while the thirds lost to Barry Villa.
