A BARRY youngster is limbering up to become a master, aged eight, after he reached the Masters Final of popular tennis South Wales 9U League.
Barry Tennis Club junior player Danny Mickelsen, has been invited to take part in the Blackdog Masters tournament for 9U (mini Orange) players.
The Blackdog events attract players from all over South Wales, competing throughout the season and earning points for wins and final table position in each event.
At the end of the season, the top eight players in the overall league table are invited to compete in the Masters event, and this season, Danny finished in fourth place.
The Year 3 Barry Island primary pupil will compete in the Masters on July 20 alongside players from across South Wales, from Carmarthen to Newport.
Danny, who has Diabetes Type 1, started playing tennis at Barry Tennis Club, aged four, and trains there at least twice a week, with competitions most weekends and additional monthly training camps with the South Wales Development Squad.
Mum Penny said: “There has been a lot of speculation during Wimbledon commentaries about the cost of developing good quality junior players, and Danny is evidence that you do not need to attend top flight tennis academies in order to compete at the same level as the best players in the area. With good quality coaching - in Danny's case provided by Vale Tennis Academy - a good level of fitness, and, most importantly, commitment from the player and their family, success is achievable without excessive financial input.”
Danny said: “I want to play at Wimbledon one day. I'd like to play my little brother (Scott, currently aged two) in the final there.”
Barry Tennis Club caters for all ages and abilities, and whether you want to meet new people, get a bit more mobile, enjoy a sporting activity with your children, or get into one of our teams, the club has something for everyone.
