Barry 56-10 Tonyrefail

Tries: Provis (3), Poole, L O’Sullivan, Rhys O’Sullivan, Buckland, C Scott

Cons: E Scott (8)

BARRY ended their season with the visit of Tonyrefail, in what was head coach Darren Gibbon’s last game in charge.

The management decided to switch captain Hywel Jones into the second row, with his partner Callum Scott. Hadfield returned to the starting line-up whilst the side also welcomed Andrew Buckland to the bench after a long absence.

Barry began at a breathtaking pace, knowing that the visitors were unlikely to be able to live up with them. They were correct, and a smart move from behind a set piece saw Dave Provis crash over underneath the posts. Einan Scott stroked over the extras.

Tonyrefail only had their tight-five who offered any resistance to the Barry onslaught, and when the Barry pack gained parity in both set-piece and open play, the result became ominous. It was no surprise when Owain Poole scored the second try of the game from close range; Scott adding the extras.

The floodgates threatened to open but the visitors tried to slam the door shut with some resolute defending, if offering little of an attacking threat. The pressure eventually told though, as a flowing move was finished off by Rhys O’Sullivan; Scott converting.

Barry were to have one more score before half-time, as Luke O’Sullivan, fresh from his hat-trick against the same opponents a fortnight ago, broke through midfield amidst a flurry of missed tackles, to race under the posts to score. The conversion was a formality.

Tonyrefail did rally after the game was a foregone conclusion, and scored two unconverted tries of their own to reward their spirited display, but ultimately it was Barry who dominated the second half to run in more scores.

Provis scored his second after the interval, profiting from some prolonged Barry pressure, before substitute Buckland got in the act, scoring with his first touch. Brad White then made a break from his own half, bearing down on the try line before offloading to Callum Scott who raced through to score.

Barry finished the scoring with the last move of the game, as Provis completed his hat-trick by touching down in the corner. Einan Scott kicked all the conversions to give Barry a resounding 56-10 win to round off a superb second half of the season.

The Barry Presentation Evening will be on Saturday, June 7. Please contact the club for details.
