EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of June 6, 1963:

* The busiest Whitsun ever! That’s the verdict of everyone connected with the gigantic influx of people to Barry Island over the weekend. It was a weekend of records – record crowds, record temperatures and record traffic jams.

* The crowning of the May Queen and the Children’s Concert in the Memorial Hall, on Friday, took on a regal atmosphere. When the 1962 queen Janet Willliams and the new queen, Yvonne Maddocks, walked down the aisle in their full-length gowns.

* Vera Scott on Sunday became the second woman player of the Brynhill Golf Club to hole in one! She accomplished the feat on the short 10th hole – 150 yards.

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of June 2, 1988:

* The New Mayor of Barry, Cllr Jacqueline Price, has clashed with the owner of the Majestic Holiday Centre at Barry Island following an ‘unofficial’ visit to investigate complaints from Chesterfield holidaymakers on Bank Holiday Monday. Cllr Price, accompanied by two Barry Town Council colleagues, and ‘Echo’ reporter Peter Collins was ‘detained’ by security officers for acting ‘suspiciously’.

* The town of Barry will burst into life next March with a street festival organised by Valley and Vale Community Arts and sponsored by Barry Town Council. From October various groups of people – young, old unemployed, disabled and able bodied – will start preparing for what has been described as ‘the most exciting open air event Barry has ever seen.’

* The continued existence of the old Barry Town Hall would be a ‘positive hindrance to the redesign of the town centre’ say the Barry Development Partnership. The Partnership, in a paper called ‘The future of Barry Town Centre,’ says the town hall should be replaced by modern buildings which could accommodate the Barry Town Council and a library.
