THE Merchant Navy Association of Barry will remember the Barry Waterfront Festival on Saturday and Sunday, most of all for the impression left by the Officers and crew of the Minehunter HMS Ramsey.

They helped to rekindle a sense of the history of Barry as an important seaport. They also promoted the reputation of the Royal Navy.

On Sunday morning, local members of the Merchant Navy Association (Wales) and the Royal British Legion joined the Mayor and councillors for a Thanksgiving Service at 10am in a marquee alongside No 8 coal tip.

Music from the Vale of Glamorgan Band helped to promote a true appreciation of Merchant Navy day – Friday, September 3.

Jane Hutt AM also attended the service.

On Saturday evening, HMS Ramsey’s captain, Lieutenant-Commander Bush together with his crew, entertained people from the town, including Jim Greenway, chairman of the Merchant Navy Association, with kindness and a sincere appreciation of the history of the port.

This was reinforced on leaving. As we walked down the gangway Lieutenant-Commander Bush came to attention and saluted us – two quite ordinary Merchant Seamen!

I must admit, for the first time in my life I appreciated that recognition and respect are involved in the simple act of saluting.
