THE Welsh Labour government’s attempt to scrap the Right to Buy scheme will undermine social mobility, and deprive hundreds of local families of an opportunity to get on the housing ladder for the first time.
The Right to Buy has given more than 1,000 Vale families an opportunity to get on the housing ladder for the first time. It has been transformational in terms of social mobility and it’s deeply regretful that the Labour Party wants to stifle that.
There isn’t even a good argument for it to be scrapped, and pulling up the ladder on council tenants won’t tackle Wales’ housing crisis.
The Right to Buy Scheme doesn’t deplete the housing stock, it empowers people to take a stake in the home in which they already live.
Our housing crisis is the result of a severe shortage of affordable housing in Wales because Labour hasn’t built enough affordable homes – not because council tenants have had a chance to buy theirs.
