I AM a male in his 20s that like many others is finding it difficult to break into the job scene.

My main passion is journalism and I have written this piece as I believe it is important for people to realise how tough it is out there. I hope this piece captures your eye and leads to make people more aware.

Whether we like it or not we are a society that is still constructed in a patriarchal manner.

Most actors still come from privileged backgrounds, jobs are still given on the basis of who you know not what you know and employers still exploit young people that have just come out of school as they are paid less than those who are 18 and older which makes it difficult for most people that are 18 and over to make an honest living to build a life, this leads to stress, depression and in some serious cases may even lead to suicide.

The process of finding work is made even harder when you realise that education does not equal job opportunities with people that have graduate degrees finding it tough to find work while that one kid that messed around in class and ended up just scrapping passes has a paid job.

You may ask “what we can do about this?” Personally I would introduce a system where shortlisted applicants are chosen on a weekly trial rather than over an interview as an interview situation may prove daunting for the hardest workers and easy for the slackers.

In conclusion in my opinion we have a duty as a society to help our young people become independent as they are the future.
