YOUR edition of May 26, kindly highlighted the recent very successful trip by Barry Male Voice Choir (BMVC) to Scotland and the forthcoming annual concert on June 3.

I wonder how many people realise that the choir is the longest established public performing group in the Vale of Glamorgan – having been singing since their formation in 1902?

Whilst there is always a friendly association between male voice choirs, it should be noted that BMVC has been in continuous existence for much longer than many more vaunted Welsh male voice choirs and this should be a genuine cause for pride in Barry and its cultural heritage and deserving of local public support.

As a chorister I’m obviously biased.

But in spite of/or because of that, I would appeal to your readers to come along and attend the concert on Friday at St Helen’s church and support the choir, it is the only concert that is aimed at raising funds directly for the choir; as most of our performances are generally targeted at supporting and helping fundraise for other organisations.

Finally (another) appeal to any local men to please consider joining the choir, you don’t know what you are missing – it really is rewarding and fun.

We have been successful in recruiting around 20 new members over the past two years but we are always looking for more men to join us and continue the long-established tradition of male voice singing in Barry.

The choir is really looking forward to seeing everyone who can make it on Friday, come along and listen, (you can even join in during one section of the program if you wish).

Please see the choir’s web site at barrymalevoicechoir.co.uk for more information.
