WITH the arrival of Christmas people turn their minds to writing Christmas cards, and the local Scouts offer a cut-price service to help their funds. As a former Wolf Cub and Scout myself in the 118th (Horwood Ave) troop in Derbyshire, I can understand their need.
However, as a former partner in the largest GB Trade Union legal practice (Thompsons) and also as a former vice president and treasurer of Cardiff Trades Unions Council, I can also see that this initiative also undermines the jobs of workers in our postal service.
It is already failing particularly in the letter and card delivery service. Therefore I never use the Scout service, good as it may be for local delivery.
Instead I contribute to the Scout movement by other means, so satisfying both organisations without undermining either. Why can’t others?
