PUPILS at a Barry primary school got permission to paint on a former court site minus risk of reprimand.

Ysgol Gwaun y Nant youngsters turned the former Barry Magistrates Courts site on Thompson Street into an art gallery with their paintings of local Barry landmarks

Jehu Project Services, the contractor building the apartments for Newydd Housing and the Vale Council, have worked with the Year 6 group who have visited the site several times as part of the joint project.

The Gibbonsdown-based pupils also visited the National Museum to research art and painting styles and techniques.

Pupils set up their artwork in display on the tower crane base on their final site visit before moving to senior school.

Headteacher Rhydian Lloyd and class teacher Miss Davies accompanied the group.

Mr Lloyd said: “We are delighted to have links with local projects and employers such as on this site and the pupils have enjoyed their visits and learnt so much.”

The £6m project, which will provide 52 affordable homes for local people plus retail units, is due to be completed by February 2015.

Site manager Nyron Wood turned art curator for the day as he helped to display the work.

He said: “It was great to see the hard work of the pupils and wonderful to be able to showcase their paintings for all our staff and visitors to admire.”
