I WOULD like to pass on my thanks to the Royal British Legion for organising such a successful Remembrance Day march in Barry on Sunday, November 10.

I would also like to thank the people of Barry for lining the streets and surrounding the Cenotaph to show their respect for those who serve or have served in the armed forces.

I was also delighted to see so many children and young people taking part in the march including various Brownies, Beavers, Scouts and Cadets groups as it is important that we teach the next generation of citizens the sacrifice so many have made and continue to make to ensure we live the free life that we do today.

Following the wreath laying, a service was held in the Memorial Hall and both downstairs and upstairs were full of the people of Barry who wanted to be part of this Act of Remembrance.

Next year will see the anniversary of 100 years since the start of the Great War and this will be the opportunity for our children to learn of the devastation of conflict but also about the sacrifice made by so many during those few years. There may no longer be any living survivors of the First World War, but we will continue to remember them not only during the commemorations next year but we shall continue to show our gratitude every year on Remembrance Sunday.

Councillor Claire Curtis

Mayor of Barry
