I REFER to your Looking Back article sent in by Mr J Byrne with a photo of members of Barry Rowing Club as winners of the Ross Shield (Barry & District News, November 8).
I can identify myself as the young boy holding the oar in the background – Gareth Jones. The year was probably 1965 and I was 12.
The Tommy mentioned in the article was Tommy Hughes – seated far right.
I left Barry many years ago, although return regularly to visit my mother and brother.
My interest in rowing, first encouraged by Norman Botting at Barry, continued after leaving Barry and culminated in rowing at Henley Royal Regatta in 1986.
My son has since eclipsed me, winning Gold for Great Britain at the Under 23 world Championships in 2010.
