A SUPERMARKET worker is hoping friendly bikers and vintage car owners will rally to support a children's cancer charity in honour of a Barry schoolgirl.

Cardiff Bay Morrisons employee Roger Clarke is determined to double the £1900 raised last year when he used its car park to stage a Custom Bike Show and Fun Day, after Romilly Primary pupil Ellie Jones was diagnosed with a rare form of liver cancer in May last year.

Roger decided to raise funds for Latch after hearing about the support the charity gave to Ellie and her family.

Roger said: "Last year John Jones' daughter Ellie was taken ill with liver cancer, so all the Morrisons stores in the area started organising events to raise money for the family to support them during the tough times ahead.

"I asked if I could do a fun day in Morrisons car park and they said yes.

"I was working one Sunday and several bikers came in to the store and they had custom bikes in the car park. I asked if they could come down and they all said yes."

Two months of organisation saw Roger write to more than 100 companies, make numerous calls and secure a funfair, hospital radio station, play bus, hoopla games, tombola, raffles, balloons, and the main act - the bikers.

Roger said: "You should have heard them coming down the motorway - an almighty roar and horns going and everyone helping on the day to set up turned their heads to look. It was spectacular!

"The bikers couldn't do enough for Ellie - giving her rides up and down the car park and she loved it.

"She was given the task of picking her best three bikes and giving them a small plaque as a big thank you for coming down for her."

Roger added: "This year I've I decided to do it all over again for Latch and do a Custom Bike, Trike and Fun Day.

"I've got custom bikes, trikes and classics coming down on the day, police, fire service and the army and some vintage cars, funfair, the play bus, the Falconry UK Team with a birds of prey display and the chance to have a have a photo taken with them.

"There will also be stalls, trade stands and refreshments, and a beauty tent where you can come and have your nails and hair done."

Morrisons Cardiff Bay is now selling raffle tickets with prizes including a Virgin Hot Air balloon experience for two, a £300 luggage set, days out and games, shopping vouchers, hampers and a massage.

Tickets cost £1 with the draw at 3.30pm.

Any vintage car owners interested in making an appearance can call Roger at the store on 029 2023 2883.

The Latch 2012 Custom Bike Show and Fun Day is at Morrisons car park, Cardiff Bay International Sports Village, from 10am until 4pm on Sunday, September 2.
