THE information commissioner has ruled the Welsh Government must publish details of financial support for the Vale-based Aston Martin luxury car plant.

Commissioner, Elizabeth Denham has given ministers 35 days to send the information.

The car manufacturer announced last year that it would build a base in St Athan.

Businessman Tom Gallard asked the government to provide details of the financial support agreed with Aston Martin to create 750 jobs at St Athan, in February 2016.

But the government turned down the request saying disclosing that information could "prejudice" commercial interests.

Mr Gallard appealed against that decision saying there was a public interest in knowing how "large amounts of taxpayers' money is spent so that citizens and taxpayers can decide if it was a good deal or not."

Ms Denham said the government had previously publicised financial support given to various companies and the amount another company could get was unlikely to be affected by disclosure of the aid to Aston Martin.

The government also argued disclosure of the information would be likely to "prejudice the effective conduct of public affairs".

The opinion was put forward by First Minister Carwyn Jones.

The commissioner decided this was not a reasonable view, but the Welsh Government had the right to appeal.

The Welsh Government is considering its next steps.
