A MULTI-MILLION pound housing development in Barry town centre will start this week promising 30 homes to local people.

The £3.5 million scheme will comprise of apartments built on the site of the former adult training centre on Woodlands Road.

Contractors Pegasus Development and Greenwich Communities are undertaking the project on behalf of Newydd housing association in partnership with Vale of Glamorgan Council and the Welsh Government.

Newydd chief executive, Paul Roberts said: “There is a real need for one and two bedroom properties in Barry. We urge local people to sign up to Homes4U, the local housing register, to ensure they get every opportunity to apply for a home when these properties are finished next year.”

The development will offer one and two bedroom apartments for affordable rent and built to level three of the code for sustainable homes.

Twenty-four one bedroom and six two bedroom apartments will be completed by summer 2017.

There will be three adapted properties for people with mobility issues.

Apprenticeship opportunities will be available to local people and contributions of £68,000 will be spent on public open space as well as £30,000 on improving transport options for the area.

The properties will be advertised in local newspapers in 2017.

Local people with an interest in renting the homes can apply by registering with Homes4U, the local housing register managed by the Vale council.
