MORE than 400 rail enthusiasts will set foot on Barry Island train station’s platform thanks to the return of a train after a 20-year wait.

The 11-coach train – which topped and tailed by a Class 66 Locomotive – will arrive from London at 11.11am on Saturday, August 22 – departing Barry Island at 4.38pm with an excursion to Machen Quarry.

Volunteer Mike Baker said passengers would also visit Gladstone Road and Barry Waterfront station.

He said: “It’s bringing people into Barry Island who would not normally have come.”

The return has been made possible thanks to the restoration of the second railway track.

Barry Tourist Railway chairman, John Buxton said: “We have an 11-coach excursion from London arriving at Barry this Saturday bringing over 400 people to Barry Island for the day. This is the first excursion for about 20 years and we hope to repeat this many times in future years.

This is all part of the Barry Tourist Railway's Plan to bring more visitors to Barry and we are enhancing our facilities to deal with such extra services including extending our platform.
