DOG walkers proved fundraising can be a stroll when they raised £300 for two charities at a Barry Island event earlier this month.

Petagonia, for Velindre cancer care and The Dogs Trust, saw up to 40 owners and their hounds walk from Barry Island to Jackson’s Bay, and back in aid of the two good causes.

Event organiser Maria O’Hennessey also donated the doggie treats, left over from the raffle to the centre in Bridgend when she presented the charity with their share of the charitable efforts.

Caroline Maciver, of Barry, said she and Jaci Parker, also of Barry, were walking in memory of Jaci’s husband Nick Parker who died, aged 59, in 2013 after dealing with cancer, and after being nagged by friend, cancer patient, and Avastin campaigner, Lesley Woolcock who urged her to take part.

Caroline said: “I think the walk is a good idea to raise awareness for people. They are doing a fabulous job.”

Barry-born weatherman Derek Brockway will be the next to step out for Velindre cancer care as he begins training for his Patagonia trek in 2015.

Derek needs 50 enthusiastic walkers to join him for a practise walk from Barry to Rhoose Point, on November 30.

The Walk with the Weatherman event will kick off at the Dock Offices, Ffordd Y Mileniwm, Barry, and move along the coast to Rhoose Point.

Entry costs £5 per person with each participant required to raise a minimum of £50 for Velindre.
