RECENTLY, 24 Air Cadets from 372 (Barry) Squadron travelled to MOD St Athan to experience a range of fun sports and sporting activities.

The aim of the day was to inspire the air cadets to enjoy and participate more frequently in sports; whilst also improving their fitness and stamina. This was also a great social opportunity for Barry cadets to meet other squadrons and make new friends.

During the day the cadets tried their hand at archery, bench ball, fun circuits, soft ball, trim trail, Unihoc, spin bikes, tug of war, crab football, ultimate Frisbee and visually impaired football; using all the gym facilities.

Each session was approximately 20 to 40 minutes allowing for the cadets to “have a go” at the many sports on offer; especially the non-traditional sports which the cadets may never have tried before.

Helen Gibson from RAFA Youth was on hand to raise the awareness and work of RAFA Youth and Sergeant Carl Graham from RAF careers attended to also provide a range of sporting activities within his outreach sessions.

When the sports had concluded; the cadets were fed and watered in the Black Buck Club and then the cadets had the chance to relax after a long day to watch the latest Star Trek film in the Astra Cinema to finish off the day.

Flight Lieutenant Jason Horton, sports officer for No.1 Welsh Wing said: "The cadets experienced a range of sports with the focus on fun to inspire the cadets to participate more often in sports.

"Many instructors from No.1 Welsh Wing; gave their time, energy and enthusiasm to ensure the sports day was a great success.

"It was pleasing to hear throughout the day ‘howls of laughter’ around the gym and broad smiles on the faces of many cadets; which tells me the cadets were enjoying their activities.”

Cadet Connor James, of 372 (Barry) Squadron, said: "The day was amazing I tried so many sports, some for the first time.

"I really enjoyed the fun circuits and archery; which I hope to do more often."
