BARRY Air Cadet Rhys Horton spent time visiting a camp at RAF Gibraltar.

Royal Air Force Gibraltar is a unique station situated in the shadow of the 1360 foot Rock of Gibraltar adjacent to the border with Spain.

The 6000ft airfield was built at the start of the Second World War and is an integral part of Gibraltarian life as the only road into Spain crosses the runway. AF Gibraltar’s mission is to provide an operational airhead capable of mounting UK and coalition military operations and in doing so contribute to the maintenance of British sovereignty of Gibraltar.

Rhys’ unique overseas camp allowed him to meet 50 other air cadets from around England and Wales. On arrival Rhys received briefings about safety, medical emergencies, security and the camp programme.

Rhys, had the opportunity to walk to the top of the “Rock”. At the top Rhys admired the fantastic views of Gibraltar; where he saw at first hand the playful Barbary Macaques.

The week at Gibraltar was a mix of fun activities as well as military experiences.

Rhys spent quality time on the beach, ice skating, experiencing dolphin sailing safari, Bahia waterpark, Selwo adventure park and visiting St Michaels vast cave within the Rock of Gibraltar as well as shopping in the town of Casemates.

On the military side, Rhys visited the fire and police sections and had a guided tour of a Royal Navy ship; whilst also meeting Air Cadets from No.2 Overseas Air Cadet Squadron.

Rhys said: “I had the most amazing time while I was there, we did so much in seven days; I loved every minute of my stay doing the military as well as fun/leisure stuff that I never wanted to leave; I made so many new friends”.

The Cadets are eagerly looking forward to their forthcoming trip to the battlefields and memorials of Ypres (Belgium) and the Somme (France).
