A BARRY mother has slammed the driver who caused a horrific car smash which could have claimed the lives of her teenage son and his friend - after he or she fled the scene without even stopping.

Mia Tarry, of Highlight Park, told the Barry & District News how her 18-year-old son Jay and his friend Dan Smolinski, 17, narrowly avoided death in the accident last Wednesday at 11.45am on the Barry Dock Link Road.

Mrs Tarry said her son was driving his green Corsa towards McDonalds on the Link Road when he had to swerve to avoid an oncoming silver car - which was on the wrong side of the road.

The Corsa struck a lampost while the silver car drove off and did not stop.

The boys were trapped in the car, and had to be cut free by firefighters.

Mrs Tarry said: "I want the driver to show a little remorse for the fact that he drove off from two young men.

"He didn't know if they were alive or dead."

And Mrs Tarry said an emotional thank you to the three strangers who stopped and helped the lads.

Mrs Tarry said: "A wonderful lady by the name of Lorna stayed with my son the whole time - holding his hand, talking and calming him until he was cut from the wreckage of his car.

"There was another lady who stopped and she made sure Dan was okay, and a lorry driver phoned the emergency services.

"It wasn't these people's fault - yet they still stopped to help.

"They have two families' eternal thanks and I am sure a great deal of respect from those who know them, and now from those who have never met them."

Both Jay and Dan were left with cuts and bruises while Jay suffered a broken nose. They were taken to hospital and are now on the mend.

Mrs Tarry added: "There are two sets of families that are incredibly grateful that their two sons were not taken away."
