THE Vale Council is offering aspiring artists a chance to work and perform with two leading performance artists at this year's National Eisteddfod, as part of a revival of the iconic Barry Summer School.
Internationally renowned artists Phil Babot and Cathy Gordon will be hosting a five-day performance art workshop at Palmerston Community Centre from July 30 to August 3, from 10am to 5pm, for adults of all skill levels.
The participants will attempt to recreate the artistic performances known as 'happenings' at Barry Summer School during the 1960s and 1970s, culminating in group performances at the Art Central gallery at Barry Town Hall, King Square, on August 4 and at the Eisteddfod in Llandow on August 5.
Phil Babot, from Cardiff, has worked throughout the UK and across Europe, the Americas and the Far East, both as a solo artist and with influential performance companies such as Brith Gof, as well as collaborating with other international artists.
Canadian Cathy Gordon describes herself as 'an artistic adventurer'. Her work ranges from intimate one-on-one performances to large-scale multidisciplinary spectacles.
The original Barry Summer School saw pioneering new approaches to art and education during the 1960s and 1970s.
It attracted iconic artists and musicians from all over the world such as Tom Hudson, George Brecht, Robin Page, Ann Sutton, John Epstein, jazz musician Larry Adler, composers Karl Jenkins and Peter Maxwell Davies and Royal Academy artist Terry Setch, who each shared their experiences and taught at the school.
As part of the Vale of Glamorgan's revival of the summer school, a retrospective exhibition will be held at the Art Central gallery in Barry Town Hall from July 23 to September 8.
The performance art workshop is a unique opportunity to create a spectacular time-based artwork in a week for only £30, under the guidance of experienced performance artists.
