AS part of the programme which Rotary organises to help develop students skills, the Rotary Club of Barry held its young chef competition on Tuesday, January 17.

The competition was hosted by Sue Hooper, head of home economics at Bryn Hafren. Nine students competed and the judges from the Vale catering services department decided that the winner was Ryan James of Ysgol Gyfun Bro Morgannwg, with Jake Pugh of Barry Comprehensive the runner-up.

Other contestants were Alan Evans, Ben Harler Witts and Connor Mains of Ysgol Gyfun Bro Morgannwg; and Vinny Osephiss, Lauren Guercio, Sophie Finch and Chelsea Falcon of Bryn Hafren. President of Barry Rotary Club, David Ball, said all the students had distinguished themselves simply by taking part – and they could come and cook for him any time!

Speaking for the judges, Sally Thorpe commented on the high quality of many dishes and gave helpful advice.

Ryan now goes on to the next round, representing Barry in the Vale area in a contest at Cowbridge School on January 30.

If successful there he would proceed to the South Wales competition.
