FUNDRAISERS inspired by a Barry baby's daily battle with epilepsy have marked the charity's awareness day by raising money for a special children's hospital room.
Staff at Card Factory on Holton Road and at the Ty Newydd Inn in Barry signed up to help grandmother-of-three Karen Davies, and her granddaughter Neveah Mellens, raise more than £650 towards a purpose-built telemetry suite for children at Cardiff's University Hospital of Wales.
Karen, Neveah and their supporters marked Epilepsy's Global Awareness day by adopting the charity's colour scheme in the run-up to, and including, Purple Day on Saturday (March 26). Neveah's 17-month-old sister Blisse suffers from rare brain disorder Periventricular Nodular Heterotopia, which involves daily epileptic fits.
Card Factory area manager James Flower said: "We have all been touched by Blisse's situation and as a company we wanted to do what we could to help out.
"We like to support our local communities and it seemed like the right thing to do." The three-day raffle organised by Card Factory store assistant Karen - staged at the shop and pub - has so far raised £684.60 towards the £1,000 target family and supporters hope to donate to the UHW's paediatric neurology department.
The telemetry room would provide a three to five-day diagnostic assessment and include 48 hours of video telemetry – a means of monitoring and recording electrical activity within the brain.
To make a donation, take a cheque, made payable to Child Neurology Fund Nº 9120, to any bank.
