BARRY Dock RNLI and Barry Island Coastguard helped rescue a fisherman whose kayak overturned in the water last Thursday.

The man was fishing from the kayak off Cold Knap Point when it rolled over at about 12.45pm, leaving him stranded in the water.

The incident was spotted from the shore and a 999 call prompted the launch of the Barry Dock Lifeboat and two HM Coastguard pilot boats.

The man, who was wearing a lifejacket, was picked up by the lifeboat a quarter of a mile from his kayak. They then retrieved the kayak and all were brought back to the Barry harbour.

RNLI volunteer Lifeboat press officer, Gerry Adams said: "It is so important that when you partake in any maritime activity, lifejackets are a must.

"The water is still very cold and if the man had become unconscious he could have drowned - but the lifejacket gave him a chance of being found alive."

The Barry Dock Lifeboat was in action again the same evening after a 40ft yacht got into difficulty when its engine seized off Rose Point.
