ENTHUSIASTIC Barry campaigner Gerwyn Pugh is finally to see Vale MP John Smith for crucial talks over the ill-fated Knap Pool.

In a meeting arranged exclusively by the Barry and District News, the dedicated teacher and the Westminster man will thrash out the Lido's problems tomorrow night.

The busy MP has agreed to take time out from his hectic schedule to visit Gerwyn at his Park Crescent Home to listen to his concerns.

The former lifeguard at the site is keen to highlight the promises made by the Vale of Glamorgan Council in a meeting at Barry Leisure Centre four years ago.

The 32-year-old claims that the local authority said they would keep the Knap Pool for the people of Barry - not sell it off to a private developer.

He told the News: "I know there is going to be very little Mr Smith can do to help us, because this is a matter for the Vale of Glamorgan council to sort out. But knowing we might have someone else on our side will be helpful."

Gerwyn added: "I want readers to get in touch if they remember the promise made by our council that the Knap pool would stay open. I think that is the only way to get the results we want in this lovely area is to pull together."

This is a view is echoed by many residents.

Anthony Thomas, 60, of the Buttrills frequently visits the Knap with his next-door neighbour's daughter Ellie, 5, and his dog Taren.

He said: "It's great news that John Smith is getting involved. He's about one of the only politicians I have any respect for. He did a lot to help us in the Buttrills, and if anyone can get the process moving over here, he can.

"Really, I wouldn't mind seeing anything happen over here, as long as it isn't more houses. They need to maintain it better. Some days, I swear you can walk over the scum on the feeding ponds.

"So if John Smith can help with anything, it will be huge improvement."
