THE VALE'S only Welsh medium school has received has received a glowing report from the Estyn inspection team.

The inspector, spent a a week at the school at the end of the autumn term.

He said: "Ysgol Gyfun Bro Morgannwg is a good school. It is quickly achieving its vision for its pupils whilst fashioning its aim of being the centre of Welsh language and social activities within the community it serves. Standards, overall, are high.

A high proportion of the teaching is good or very good with pupils responding firmly to the challenges set."

Singled out for particular commendation in the report are standards of writing by pupils of higher ability, educational standards in physical education and personal and social education, and the quality of teaching overall, described as "one of the school's strengths", with examples of very good standards being achieved within all subjects.

The inspectors note that "The ethos of the school is stimulating, and the leadership and management of the school is very good.

It is a happy school where standards of behaviour are very good; pupils work well showing commendable enthusiasm and commitment.

Pupils are appreciated and respected".

Pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural development was found to be very good, with social development in particular identified as "one of the school's cornerstones".

The 'Buddies' system under which older pupils mentor younger ones, and the School Council are acknowledged as good opportunities to develop social responsibilities.

The governors of the school, which opened less than three years ago, are delighted with the inspection report.

Chairman of the governing body, Geraint Evans, said: "Both parents and governors can be rightly proud of this first class report and the impressive achievements of the school in such a short time.

The inspection confirmed that the school has excellent leadership and highly motivated teachers.

The school's motto Dyro dy law i mi ac fe awn i ben y mynydd (Give me your hand and we will go the the mountaintop) encapsulates our vision for all pupils to achieve their full potential whatever their abilities, and it's very satisfying to have that vision comprehensively endorsed by an independent inspection team."
