ONE of the main traffic routes in and out of Barry is set to close for up to a year, as major works are undertaken to help alleviate potential flooding problems in the area.

The works, which include the laying of a large new sewer, will be undertaken by contractors Morgan Est plc working for Welsh Water, and will necessitate the closure of the tunnel linking Weston Square and Cardiff Road.

Starting on Tuesday, May 6, the works are expected to last for up to 12 months.

In addition to the laying of the new sewer, associated works, including the relocation of gas, electricity and telecom services, need to be undertaken by other utilities.

Head of Visible Services Miles Punter said: "We appreciate the inconvenience this will cause for a large number of residents over a longer period than we would have liked, but this work is essential to try and alleviate the regular flooding problems in the area.

"The council will make every effort to ensure that the closure period is kept to an absolute minimum and that there is minimal disruption to local residents and traders."

Morgan Est and the council apologise for any inconvenience which may be caused during the closure period.

The signposted diversion route will be along Ffordd-y-Mileniwm, Gladstone Bridge and Gladstone Road, though it is expected that local traffic will also travel along Vere Street and Little Moors Hill.

It is expected that pedestrian access will be maintained.
