A FOOTBRIDGE at Barry Island Station has been closed temporarily following an outbreak of vandalism.

The footbridge forms part of the pedestrian route between Station Approach Road and Plymouth Road, and its condition is currently being assessed by the Vale of Glamorgan Council with a view to carrying out urgent repairs.

Apologising for the inconvenience caused to local residents and visitors, Director of Environmental and Economic Regeneration Rob Quick said: "The council has approved plans to provide a new footbridge in the current financial year, so it is especially disappointing that we will need to spend some of our limited resources on undertaking repairs at this stage.

"It is also of extreme concern that the anti-social activities of a minority are putting the lives of pedestrians at risk and inconveniencing local residents and visitors.

"I would urge anyone who witnesses such acts of vandalism to contact either their local police station or the council."

The proposed new footbridge will have steps and ramps to allow its easy use by bicycles, wheelchairs and pushchairs.

The plans also include an improved footway/cycle track, with lighting, from Plymouth Road, and landscaping.
