PUPILS from the Vale of Glamorgan referral unit are putting on their running shoes to raise cash for cancer care.

They will take part in a sponsored-run at Cosmeston next Monday (October 15).

The pupils - who planned the event themselves - voted that all donations would go to the Velindre Hospital Cancer Centre.

Around 20 of the pupils, who are working towards Open College Network accredited qualifications, will take part in the run.

Fifteen-year-old Jack Chatwell, of Commercial Road in Barry, said: "I voted for Velindre because it is such a worthy charity."

And Colette Lewis, also 15, of the Colcot, Barry, added: "I find it very upsetting to think of people suffering from cancer.

"I feel sorry for anyone who has to go through it and for their families.

"Hopefully we can raise a bit of money for new equipment to help make their lives better."

The Vale of Glamorgan Youth Service runs courses for the students in arts and crafts, as well as issue-based courses such as alcohol awareness and vocational training. They also study for GCSEs in Maths, English and Media.
