FROM the Archive this week features a photograph of Michaelson pawnbrokers shop at 49 Holton Road, in 1908.
Around midnight on December, 20 1908, a seaman broke into Michaelson pawnbrokers shop at 49 Holton Road and stole opera glasses, two watches and a revolver.
Police constable Luke Beirne having heard the crash of breaking glass, entered the shop and confronted the man who drew the revolver and threatened to shoot.
After a severe struggle the man was disarmed and handcuffed.
He pleaded guilty to robbery and was sentenced to five years penal servitude.
The seaman had previous convictions including burglary, receiving and stealing turnips (growing).
There’s no evidence to suggest the seaman returned to Barry after his sentence was served.
The Barry & District News would like to thank Cllr Shirley Hodges for the photograph and information.
