A BREAST cancer survivor is championing a campaign she hopes will unite people in the fight to promote early detection of cancer.

Mum-of-four Soraya Kelly has launched her #theglovesareon social media campaign and has already gained widespread support.

The 48-year-old, from Rhoose, who works as an office manager in Barry, was diagnosed with breast cancer in October 2017 and her experience has inspired her to help others fight cancer.

Mrs Kelly was on holiday in Spain when she noticed a lump and decided to visit her GP if it was still there in a few weeks.

After being diagnosed with breast cancer she underwent a lumpectomy at Llandough Hospital in November followed by four weeks of daily intense radiotherapy at Velindre hospital.

She is now taking Tamoxifen and will have annual check-ups for 10 years.

Mrs Kelly came up with her campaign idea while in her kitchen with friends Seline Ludgvison and Jane Oppen,

The campaign is characterised by the use of giant pink boxing gloves.

She said: “I wanted to do something. I wanted to give something back. I want to make a difference.

"I’ve got lots of friends and family supporting.

“I came up with the #theglovesareon as that represents me as a fighter

“My life has been a struggle, but I’ve turned it around for the positive. I’m not a victim. I have a positive view.”

Mrs Kelly has hooked up with The Spire hospital Cardiff, and St David’s 2 Shopping Centre in Cardiff to spread the message.

Barry Town United, the Fiji rugby team and Cardiff University are also on board and she is due to meet Vale AM Jane Hutt to foster more support.

Funds raised throughout the campaign will support cancer charities such as the Caron Keating Foundation and also a Barry boy diagnosed with a brain tumour.
