WEIGHT Watchers in Barry are gearing up to sacrifice their Easter treats in a bid to bring pleasure to those less fortunate - while also saving calories.

Slimmers at the Beryl Road and Highlight Park classes are collecting the chocolate and sweets to then donate to Ty Hafan children’s hospice and the Vale foodbank.

Anyone is invited to pop in to the class and contribute a treat to the appeal with Barry Asda, with its longer opening hours and Waterfront location, also acting as a collection point for the Weightwatchers appeal – enabling customers to get involved.

The Easter eggs, cakes and chocolate treats will then be delivered to the Ty Hafan and Vale foodbank after the appeal ends on Wednesday, March 28.

Weight Watchers coach Debbie Spargo said last year’s appeal had been a great success with members delighted they could buy for others who may be going without.

She said one members who volunteers for the Vale Foodbank has reported that people usually donate basic supplies like rice and pasta, which are always appreciated, rather than items considered an extravagant choice for those in need.

Mrs Spargo said: “Dealing with medical conditions is sometimes a painful or a miserable experience as is suffering financial hardship and the stresses that ensue.

“Our members wanted to spread some Easter joy in a small way.

"People can have the satisfaction of buying the chocolate and cakes and the pleasure of knowing others are enjoying the chocolate rewards.”

She added: “Members can also incorporate their own chocolate purchases as part of the Weight lifestyle plan, happy in the knowledge that that gift of giving provides that extra reward.”

Associate director at Ty Hafan, Sara Webber said: “A huge thank you to Weight Watchers Barry and Asda Barry, who have so kindly decided to donate Easter eggs.

"They’ll certainly put a smile on the faces of the children and families who are with us over the Easter period.”

Easter eggs and other treats can be donated at Mrs Spargo’s Weight Watchers classes and at the collection point in the Barry Asda store until Wednesday, March 28.

All are welcome to stop by the Weight Watchers classes in Barry, at Highlight Park community centre, Stirling Road, on Monday at 9am; Fontgary Leisure Park, Fontgary Road, Rhoose, on Monday at 6pm and at Pioneer Hall, Beryl Road, on Thursday at 6pm.
