THE deadline for submissions to be submitted to Natural Resources Wales (NRW) regarding the proposed operating licence for the Barry Docks 'incinerator' is Monday, January 22.

South Wales Central AM, Andrew RT Davies said there was still time to submit views on whether an operating permit should be granted to the Biomass UK No.2 Ltd plant in Barry Dock.

Mr Davies said residents should also write to the first minister Carwyn Jones urging the Welsh Government to step in and stop the incinerator.

An extraordinary meeting of Barry Town Council (BTC) will take place at the Gladstone Road council chamber, to discuss the authority’s further response to NRW, at 7pm on Monday, January 22.

All are invited to hear the committee discuss the letter BTC sent to NRW on December 18 last year in which it felt a longer consultation period was needed, beyond January 22.

It also felt that the information NRW presented should be understandable to all and it noted errors within NRW’s report.

BTC, having committed almost £25,000 to commissioning an independent technical advice report, also wanted NRW to reimburse the cost.

While the council believe the permit should not be granted, NRW are obliged to ensure independent monitoring would take place.

In response on January 4, an NRW spokeswoman said: “We have already conducted extensive consultation over prolonged periods throughout the determination process and gone beyond that required by statute, regulation, or guidance. In such circumstances, we would not be conducting a fair process if we were to extend it still further.”
